Miss Bennet: Christmas At Pemberley
Ever since I was young I have loved romantic historical English dramas and comedies. Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility was required watching in my home. The witty dialogue of Jane Austen has always delighted and inspired me.
That said, it was a total given that I had to see The Arts Club production of Miss Bennet: Christmas At Pemberley. This show is a festive follow-up to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and imagines the Bennets two years later coming together to celebrate Christmas.
Centring around the middle Bennet daughter, socially stunted and overlooked Mary, this period holiday romantic comedy is full of everything you have come to love about Jane Austen movies with a more comical and light-hearted approach.
An unexpected guest arrives at Pemberly to share the holidays with Mr Darcy and the Bennets and he just so happens to be a Lord. As the Bennet Sisters arrive at Pemberley, they swish around the stage in their gowns and petticoats, delightfully quipping at each other in sisterly affection and competition.
The set transported me into the drawing room at the Pemberley Estate with its elegant decor. I was totally transfixed by the show and it got me in the mood for Christmas. I hope that it comes back next year, in the meantime, I’ll be re watching Downton Abbey to fill the void.
Miss Bennet: Christmas At Pemberley runs now until December 30th, 2018
